Does the AMD Radeon “RX 8800 XT” really refer to the RX 9070 XT?
The top SKU in AMD’s next generation gaming GPU series, the Radeon RX 8800 XT, is actually the Radeon RX 9070 XT. Prior to its January 2025 release, the name and that of the Radeon RX 9070 (non-XT) may have been revealed by a European computer hardware retailer. Enthusiasts screengrabbed the two cards when they showed up in the store’s search filters. The RX 9070 is the RX 8800, while the RX 9070 XT is what was intended to be the RX 8800 XT. According to All The Watts, this might be extended to encompass the RX 9060, RX 9050, and RX 9040 series.
The company’s decision to leave the enthusiast market for gaming GPUs is most likely what led to this shift in naming. Although the performance-segment, 1440p-class SKU RX 7800 XT is formally replaced by the RX 9070 XT, the business would prefer that there not be a “void” in its product stack caused by the absence of a “RX 8900 series.” Additionally, the firm decided to forego the RX 8000 series entirely, which likely allowed it to rebrand some SKUs from the RX 7000 series to the RX 8000 series. The RDNA 4 graphics architecture is implemented by the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070, which are built on the “Navi 48” silicon.
