The China-Edition AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE GPU Has Reached the End of Its Life

Tweakers claims that several AMD board partners they contacted have confirmed that AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 GRE graphics card has achieved end-of-life status. The statement was made mere months after the card’s original 2023 exclusive debut in China and subsequent entry into European markets. Retail outlets are seeing a sharp drop in RX 7900 GRE supply, according to tweakers. Although there are still some ASUS units available, the firm has told Tweakers that these supplies are “limited.” Their repeated efforts for comment on the discontinuation have not received a response from AMD. With its attractive specs, the RX 7900 GRE is positioned as a slightly more affordable version of the more expensive RX 7900 XT.

The card has 80 CUs, 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, and runs at 260 W TDP. It is based on AMD’s RDNA 3 architecture. Given that AMD is getting ready to release its next-generation RDNA 4-based Radeon RX 8000 series, the timing of this discontinuance is very intriguing. The Radeon RX 8000 series GPUs, which should primarily target the middle-range of the next-generation GPU families, including competitors like NVIDIA with “Blackwell” and Intel with “Battlemage,” may be AMD’s attempt to clear up its remaining inventory. We must wait and watch what AMD releases before examining the reasons for AMD’s decision to EOL the Radeon RX 7900 GRE, as the new card is expected to make its appearance during AMD’s CES address on January 6 in Las Vegas.
