AMD is pushing for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, with a late October launch date.

With the threat of Intel’s Core Ultra “Arrow Lake-S” and low sales of its Ryzen 9000 “Granite Ridge” desktop CPUs, AMD is said to have given its desktop processor roadmap a shakedown. The three forthcoming Ryzen 9000X3D series processor SKUs are being hurriedly brought in by the business. A successor to the well-liked Ryzen 7 7800X3D is the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. It combines 3D V-cache technology with the new “Zen 5” microarchitecture to improve gaming performance. There are rumors that AMD is pushing the 9800X3D to release in late October. AMD believes that this chip has the potential to overtake Intel’s Core Ultra 200-series if it achieves its performance goals, which are set at roughly 15-20% over the 9700X.

It was anticipated that the non-X3D Ryzen 9000 series, like the 9700X, would perform similarly to the 7800X3D in games, giving AMD room to launch the 9800X3D in Q1-2025. However, AMD confirmed that the “Zen 5” CCD has silicon-level preparation for 3D V-cache (such as TSVs over the region with the on-die L3 cache that interface with the stacked L3D silicon). Before the 7800X3D and Intel’s 13th Gen Core “Raptor Lake,” the Ryzen 7 7700X almost had the same gaming performance as the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, therefore an analogous performance from the 9700X was anticipated. Naturally, things didn’t go as planned; in terms of gaming performance, the 9700X lagged behind the 7800X3D by a wide margin, earning it a mixed reception and poor sales.

Though the user responsible for this leak, zhangzhonghao, claims that the dual-CCD processors will do something different from the 7900X3D and 7950X3D to attract the class of buyers that want both flagship gaming performance and productivity performance competitive to the Core Ultra 9 285K, the 9800X3D won’t be the only chip from the 9000X3D series. There are also plans for the Ryzen 9 9900X3D and new flagship 9950X3D. The user did not specify what these “new features” are, but based on our best judgment, we’d assume that the processor’s two CCDs receive 3D V-cache. The release dates for the 9900X3D and 9950X3D are scheduled for Q1 2025.
