AMD unveiled the FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.1 (FSR 3.1) at GDC 2024. The super resolution upscaler from FSR 2.2 was mainly carried over into the original FSR 3.0 feature set, along with frame creation. However, the new FSR 3.1 includes many picture quality improvements to the upscaler itself, resulting in improved image quality at every performance preset. In particular, it lessens “fizziness” or flickering around moving objects by increasing the temporal stability of the output both at rest and in motion. Additionally, the upgraded model lessens ghosting and enhances detail preservation.
The next step involves a significant modification to the frame generating technology’s operation. AMD has made it possible for frame generation to be used with alternative upscaling techniques, including DLSS or XeSS, by separating FSR 3.1 frame generation from the upscaling technology. Have an RTX 30-series “Ampere” GPU that isn’t supported for DLSS 3 frame generation? There are countless ways to decouple in this way. Don’t worry; FSR 3.1 should be used for frame creation and DLSS 2 for upscaling. Additionally, AMD is consolidating its FidelityFX technology family into a new FidelityFX API, which facilitates debugging for developers and opens the door for future FSR versions to be forward-compatible. Last but not least, FSR 3.1 supports the Microsoft Xbox GDK and the Vulkan API. AMD anticipates making FSR 3.1 available to developers via its GPUOpen platform in Q2-2024. Later this year, game developers may expect to see the first applications of FSR 3.1. AMD used “Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart” to test FSR 3.1 in the interim in order to highlight the new upscaler.
