Online Surfaces of the Unreleased AMD Radeon “RX7950XTX” Prototype

Unexpectedly, an AMD graphics card prototype that had never been seen before has appeared on a Korean second-hand forum rather than in a store’s warehouse. High-resolution images of what looks to be the cooling assembly for an unreleased “RX 7950 XTX,” purportedly obtained from China’s Xianyu marketplace, were posted this week by FP32, a Quasarzone user. The triple-slot shroud is an impressive 34 cm long and 5.5 cm thick, adding an entire slot of girth and outstripping the regular RX 7900 XTX reference cooler by about 5 cm. A dense copper baseplate feeds several heatpipes that terminate in three eye-catching red-tipped fins stamped “RDNA 3.” The front contains three recessed eight-pin power connectors, indicating board power well over 450 W, a figure more frequently associated with NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 than an AMD Radeon. The prototype’s mounting locations and LED cutouts match no known PCB, and the typical back I/O bracket is completely absent, despite its outward similarity to AMD’s shipping designs.

The idea that it was a one-off engineering sample was supported by the lack of matches found when serial labels were traced in public component databases. There were no live demos or performance evaluations because the cooler did not come with a PCB. An AMD halo card, such as an RX 7950 XTX or possibly a dual-GPU RX 7990 XTX, has long been rumored as a way to close the performance gap between NVIDIA’s 80-class and 90-class products. The appearance of this monolithic cooler suggests that AMD previously thought about using faster GDDR6/GDDR6X memory in conjunction with fully unlocked Navi 31 silicon that was pushed to higher clock speeds. It’s possible that the project was discontinued because of high production costs, complicated thermal envelopes, or a deliberate choice to concentrate on value-oriented and energy-efficient designs. Regardless of the reason behind its cancellation, this abandoned cooler today serves as a reminder of AMD’s unexplored route and provides insight into the company’s aspirations prior to selecting a less ambitious course for its RDNA 3 series.
