Audiences at the 2023 InnovatiON event were taken aback when Intel gave a live demonstration of a reference laptop running a Core “Lunar Lake” CPU. This is remarkable because “Lunar Lake” won’t be released until 2025 (at least), and it succeeds both the impending “Meteor Lake” architecture and its successor, “Arrow Lake,” which makes its appearance in 2024. “Meteor Lake” is anticipated to make its debut from Intel later this year. The fact that Intel has demonstrated the viability of the Intel 18A foundry node is also surprising. It is anticipated that the Compute tile of “Lunar Lake” will be based on Intel 18A, which is four generations ahead of the current Intel 7 and will be followed along the way by Intel 4, Intel 3, and Intel 20A.
The hardware foundation of AI Boost, Intel’s third generation NPU, was showcased for its generative AI capabilities. The processor was built to create a visual of a giraffe wearing a hat using a local session of a tool resembling Stable Diffusion, and a GPT application was made to create original lyrics for a Taylor Swift-inspired song. Using the chip’s NPU, both jobs were finished live on stage in fractions of the time it usually takes for discrete AI accelerators or cloud-based services.
