A survey conducted by Steam suggests that 32 GB of RAM may become the new norm for gamers.
Another update from the Steam Hardware and Software Survey shows us the direction that the average PC player is taking. System memory is showing an intriguing increase this time around, especially among users with 32 GB of RAM. Although 16 GB of RAM continues to be the most popular configuration, making up 41.88% of all systems surveyed, 32 GB is actually the next most popular configuration, at 36.46%, with an increase of +1.31% in August over July. If the growth keeps up, 32 GB systems may become the normal choice for gamers in a matter of months, which would mean that 32 GB RAM systems may have more users than ever before. Gamers are choosing larger capacity, whether it’s a prebuilt, do-it-yourself, or laptop system, as DDR5 memory is getting cheaper and OEMs are providing more memory choices.
That change is fueled by some well-known factors. Since densities were doubled from DDR4 to DDR5, new designs going forward usually start at 32 GB from a pair of 16 GB modules because both AMD and Intel’s current generation platforms use dual channel DDR5 configurations. Since 8 GB modules are quite uncommon, the only option to achieve just 16 GB of RAM in desktop computers of the present generation is usually to use single channel memory from a single installed DIMM. Anyone who streams, records, or runs background programs while playing a game benefits from the additional headroom, and modern AAA titles increasingly require 32 GB for the best experience at high or ultra settings. For certain users, local AI plays a role. Though some CPU-based or very large-model setups might also raise system RAM needs, many hobbyist AI tasks rely on GPU VRAM. Although they are a specialized example, high-end desktop setups demonstrate the memory requirements of certain tasks. Larger capacity are also preferred by professionals, students, and content producers who employ rendering, CAD, or EDA in addition to gaming. Lastly, in order to future-proof their PCs and update a GPU later without worrying about memory, many gamers purchase more RAM.
