A Strange “Navi 48 XTX” Graphics Card Prototype Was Found in Regulatory Documents

When this graphics card was being shipped internationally, Olrak29 noticed anything odd about it. The card’s shipment description is “GRAPHIC CARD NAVI48 G28201 DT XTX REVB-PRE-CORRELATION AO PLATSI TT(SAMSUNG)-Q2 2024-3A-102-G28201.” With the board number “G28201,” this can be decoded as a graphics card for the desktop platform. Based on the B revision of the PCB, it has an optimized version of the “Navi 48” silicon. It is dated Q2-2024 and contains memory chips manufactured by Samsung.

With the RDNA 4 generation, AMD intends to leave the enthusiast gaming graphics card market. In addition to being competitive with the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090, the business had unexpected success with the crypto-mining market explosion when it first entered this space with the RX 6800 series and RX 6900 series RDNA 2 generation. By the time RDNA 3 and the RX 7900 series were out, this bust, and the chip was unable to compete with NVIDIA’s flagship. Large chips based on the newest process nodes became even less practical for a market like enthusiast graphics around this time due to the AI acceleration boom, which compressed foundry allocation of all major chipmakers, including AMD. With its allocation, the company would choose to manufacture CDNA AI accelerators. With all of this, AMD may be able to take a share of the performance market with its fastest GPUs from the RDNA 4 generation, which might replace the current RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT.
